Next Federal Election: Monday, April 28, 2025

A Canadian federal election provides citizens an opportunity to participate in our democracy and vote for their district’s Member of Parliament to represent them in the government.

To vote in the upcoming federal election one needs to be a Canadian citizen and at least 18 years of age.

  1. The first step is to register to vote, or check to confirm you are registered and the Online Voter Registration Service.
  2. You should receive a Voter Information Card in the mail. This card will tell you when the election is and where you need to go to vote (if you choose to vote in person).
  3. Learn about the candidates running in your area. Use the list of candidates for the Portage-Lisgar federal election district. Candidates usually will have their own websites and social media accounts where you can learn about their priorities and opinions.
  4. Determine if you will vote on election day – April 28, or in advance on April 18, 19, 20 or 21 at your assigned voting place. You may also vote by mail if you apply for a ballot by April 22.
  5. Bring along your Voter Information Card, and ID when you go to vote. The ID can be a drivers license, or any other government of Canada issued photo ID. Or you can bring two pieces of ID if both have your name and one has your current address on it.
  6. Vote for your preferred candidate. You have the right to vote for whoever you want. Nobody can tell you who to vote for, and nobody will find out who you voted for.
